Tiger Woods says he knows his golf game and proves it at the Greenbrier

Tiger Woods does not care what you think about his golf game, which seems to be in pretty good shape after a first-round 4-under 66 at the Greenbrier Classic.

Tiger Woods told us on Wednesday he was probably more familiar with the progress he was making with his game than were the hordes of folks assessing it from afar. Turns out -- at least through his first 18 holes at the Greenbrier Classic -- that the owner of the most analyzed golf swing in the history of the game knew whereof he spoke.

US Open Golf 2015: Latest Odds and Betting Tips for Golf's Top Contenders

If you're looking for a long shot at the 2015 U.S. Open, it may be hard to fathom, but Tiger Woods might be your best option. Did you ever think you would see the day when one of the greatest golfers in history had 50-1 odds to win the U.S. Open?

2015 U.S. Open Odds
PlayerOdds
Rory McIlroy7-1
Jordan Spieth8-1
Phil Mickelson16-1
Dustin Johnson18-1
Justin Rose18-1
Rickie Fowler18-1
Tiger Woods50-1

Woods is coming off the worst 72-hole performance of his career at the Memorial, a tournament he once seemed to own. Obviously, confidence in him winning a major isn't particularly high in the golf community. That's exactly why he's a solid betting option in this tournament.
Don't get it twisted, he's not a guy you should be plopping down huge chunks of cash on. But he is still Tiger Woods.
We've seen him in stretches this season still display the skill level that once separated him from every other player in the world. The problem is a lack of consistency. After a nine-hole practice round at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington, the site of the 2015 U.S. Open, Woods sounded optimistic about his prospects of improving his play through some key adjustments.
Per Bob Harig of ESPN.com, Woods said:
I had to make those. It's more of a commitment than anything else. I had to make a commitment and I have. And things are starting to come together piece by piece. All the big change is already in and now it's just refining it and actually now playing more golf, playing more tournament golf.
Do you trust that Woods can put it together? Golf is a cruel game. There's no doubt Woods has put in the work, but hard work doesn't always render results on the golf course. Yet at 50-1, Woods is still a tantalizing option that I couldn't pass on if I were looking for a player who could produce a huge return on a small investment.

Summer Solstice Golf Challenge is back: Apply for spot in free contest at Hickory Nut

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Attention golfers -- what's better than free golf, along with free food and drinks?
We can't think of much and we're pleased to announce the return of The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com Summer Solstice Golf Challenge, which returns for a fifth year on Friday, June 19 at Hickory Nut Golf Course in Columbia Station.
We are seeking at least six area golfers to play in the sunup-to-sundown Challenge to see how many holes they can complete.
Scroll down to access the short contest entry form. Golfers have until Friday, May 29 at 5 p.m. to apply for a spot in the contest. The biggest criteria is telling us why we should select you. All greens fees and riding carts, food and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided free to the winners.

Here are the full details on entering the free contest:
What, when, where: We are looking for six golfers from Northeast Ohio to play Friday, June 19 in the 16-hour Summer Solstice Golf Challenge at Hickory Nut Golf Course in Columbia Station. (We realize the summer solstice is June 21 but we wanted to avoid holding the contest on a weekend when courses are jammed).
Hours: Players will golf from sunup to sundown — roughly 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
It's free for contest winners: All greens fees and riding carts will be covered, in addition to food and non-alcoholic drinks for the six contest winners.
